Senior Spotlight 🎓: Thalia Culpus
Thalia is a Home Flight scholar from Warm Springs, OR, majoring in sociology with a minor in Native American Studies. She is also a member of the LGBT community.Â
For Thalia, the Native American Student Union (NASU) played a big part in helping with her transition from a rural reservation to a city with a large campus. She shares that the Many Nations Longhouse provided a place to study, get food, and connect with other Native students.Â
"The longhouse provided safety and comfort," Thalia said. "That served as a reminder of why I chose to pursue my degree at the University of Oregon. The longhouse is a representation of resilience because, in spite of the numerous social injustices that Native Americans continue to face, our culture and people continue to shine
through and are gradually gaining the recognition they deserve. I feel so overwhelmed with optimism when I see all these other Native students and personnel at the longhouse."
