Gary Bjorge’s journey as a blood donor began in 1973 with a desire to give back. Inspired by colleagues who regularly rolled up their sleeves, he decided to do the same.
That simple decision turned into a lifelong commitment. Over the past 50 years, Gary has donated an incredible 1,122 units of blood and platelets with RedCrossOfWisconsin. His blood has helped patients from Atlanta and New York to Illinois and Minnesota.
Gary’s blood is special because he has type O negative blood. Known as the universal blood type, it’s most commonly used for transfusions when the recipient’s blood type is unknown — which is why it’s often used in cases of trauma, emergency or surgery.
On top of that, Gary also has CMV-negative blood, making his donations especially valuable for premature babies and infants with weakened immune systems. He’s proud to be part of a group affectionately known as “Heroes for Babies," donors whose blood can help the tiniest patients survive and thrive.
