Just one month before her 4th birthday, Olivia was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Over the course of her treatment, she received more than 20 blood transfusions, each one a lifeline. Now 8 years old and in remission, Olivia is thriving. Her mother, Sarah, gives back by hosting an annual blood drive during the week of Olivia’s birthday in her honor — complete with cupcakes, balloons and banners. “These drives are a way for us to celebrate with the community and the fact that we get to have Olivia for more birthdays,” Sarah said. To date, donations collected through these blood drives have impacted over 200 lives. Sarah keeps track of this number because she wants her daughter to realize the impact she has made when she’s older. “All of those lives were saved in honor of Olivia’s journey,” Sarah said.
