After decades of service and making history, Shue Jennings-Schwinn finally got her moment of recognition.
Shue was the only woman among 30 veterans on a recent Honor Flight — a nonprofit that flies veterans age 65 and older to visit memorials in Washington, D.C., free of charge — to commemorate service during the Vietnam War.
"I was welcomed with open arms by everyone," Shue said. "I got home with 30 new brothers."
She joined the U.S. Army in 1973 as a member of the Women’s Army Corps. Trained as a flight operations coordinator, Shue served on two bases in Germany.
“Although I wasn’t eligible to actually step foot in Vietnam when I served, I knew many men who had," Shue said. "I worked at trying to be there for them, to help them process their terrible experiences in any way I could."
Her visit to D.C. included a stop at the Military Women’s Memorial, of which she has been a charter member for years but never saw in person.
Shue continues her life of service as a RedCrossNewMexic...
