If someone you love has diabetes, having a plan and knowing first aid can be lifesaving for them. Here’s how Dana, who has type 1 diabetes, stays prepared for a low blood sugar emergency.
If a person is unresponsive:
- Call 911.
- Turn them on their side into a recovery position.
- Make sure their airway is clear.
- Monitor their breathing until help arrives.
If a person is alert:
- Have them check their sugar levels.
- If their levels are low or they can’t test, give them 20 grams of sugar if they’re an adult or 15 grams if they’re a child.
- Have them check their levels again if possible.
- If their condition does not change within 10 minutes or worsens, call 911.
