One South Carolina teen's birthday was made not by a gift he received, but a gift he gave: He saved a 13-year-old boy's life.
Champ Harris was celebrating his 16th birthday while on vacation with his family when he suddenly heard screaming. He ran over to a crowd of people surrounding Austin Menin who was having a seizure and bleeding.
Champ, who is also a lifeguard, took an AED and CPR class just one month earlier. He knew exactly what to do.
"The training was all in the back of my mind," Champ said. "I didn’t doubt anything I was doing."
While directing someone to call 911, Champ got Austin into a recovery position and immediately provided first aid. He kept him stabilized until paramedics arrived.
Thanks to Champ's knowledge and bravery, Austin is alive and well today. The RedCrossSC honored Champ with a Certificate of Merit, celebrating his actions alongside his family and Austin. Way to go, Champ! ❤️ #LifesavingAwards
