Can you imagine evacuating an active wildfire with seven dogs? That's what Terry Birch and her son did when California’s fast-moving Borel Fire threatened their community.
They evacuated quickly to a Red Cross shelter, thanks to an alert they received on their phone.
Terry was grateful to find a place that welcomed her and her beloved rescues. “I’m very appreciative of the Red Cross shelter,” she said. “I’m definitely more comfortable here than I would be at home.”
Terry hopes to find homes for some of the dogs who she found wandering the woods. For now, she's making sure they get lots of cuddles and belly rubs while she plans her next steps.
More than 90 large active wildfires are burning in the U.S. and over 4.8 million acres have already burned in 2024, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. If you live in a wildfire-prone area, take this as your sign to make an emergency plan that always includes your pets!
