What’s a defensible space? The RedCrossNorthwest disaster team can tell you, plus teach you how to build one around your home to reduce the risk of a wildfire spreading.
This education is part of a pilot program that we launched in 2021 to help families in wildfire-prone communities better plan and prepare in advance.
Red Cross disaster workers, and sometimes firefighters, visit homes and evaluate the surrounding area for wildfire risks. They provide steps on how a family can improve their defensible space and ways to plan ahead like mapping out an evacuation plan and putting together a go-kit.
Although this program is still in its beginning stages, we’re proud that our teams have helped nearly 2,000 residents and made over 770 homes safer from wildfires. As disasters continue to become more frequent and intense, we're committed to helping families prepare in new ways.
