6 days old. 6 months old. 3 years old. These were all times when little Remington underwent heart surgery and needed blood transfusions.
Doctors detected a malformation in Remington’s heart when his mother, Amanda, was pregnant with him. He was delivered by emergency C-section and born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome — meaning the left side of his heart, which pumps blood throughout the body, did not develop properly.
Through his multiple heart surgeries, doctors meticulously worked to redirect that function of his heart to his lungs, which now serve as his blood pump. Now 6 years old, Remington still only has half a heart, but is healthy and has no other surgeries planned.
Remington likes to show off the collection of beads he accumulated for every blood draw and procedure he underwent, and he tells his classmates that his heart is special. ❤️
