What compels you to volunteer? Katie Ahmann is a registered nurse who spent several years working in the intensive care unit of a large midwestern hospital. She wanted to help people affected by disasters as a Red Cross volunteer. Now, she’s on Maui supporting survivors impacted by the devastating wildfires as a disaster health services volunteer. Katie stayed overnight with patients to monitor and respond to their immediate health needs and assisted them through relocation from shelters to hotels and transition to long-term care and recovery. “I feel grateful that I have had the privilege of helping people in some of their toughest moments,” Katie said. She’s part of the 850+ trained Red Crossers who have answered the call to help and deployed to Hawaii in person and virtually.
