Just two weeks after 15-year-old Ayala Bennett completed an American Red Cross first aid and CPR course, she used that same training to save her 4-year-old sister’s life.
While on vacation, Ayala’s sister fell into a backyard pool and was discovered unconscious at the bottom. Ayala sprang into action, using her CPR knowledge and skills, to react quickly and perform CPR until medical help arrived.
Her sister fully recovered because of her swift actions, and the NOHRedCross recognized her with a Red Cross Certificate of Merit, the highest award given to people who save or sustain a life using skills learned in a Red Cross course.
Ayala’s training instructor, Shira Goldsmith of Goldsmith Swim School, was also recognized with a Red Cross Lifesaving Award for equipping Ayala with the knowledge and skills needed to save her sister’s life.
“It made me feel so good, that she was able to save her sister,” Shira said. “It made me think, this is why I do what I do.” 💙
