Before the soup cans, Marilyn Monroe, and Pop Art, Andy Warhol was drawing shoes.
In the 1950s, Warhol was already a successful commercial illustrator in New York, best known for his playful shoe advertisements. He even hosted coloring parties where friends helped hand-color his illustrations, while his mother contributed lettering to some of his work.
Long before turning everyday objects into iconic artworks, Warhol was finding inspiration in the ordinary.
