Jean-Michel Basquiat
Glenn
Acrylic, oilstick, and photocopy collage on canvas
1985
Private collection
Basquiat first became recognized as a graffiti artist, known for spray-painting poetic phrases in public places and signing them “SAMO.” Glenn features a human head, which is shown on a collaged bed of drawings. Heads appear throughout Basquiat’s work in forms that range from the skeletal to the symbolic, sometimes as portraits of friends and celebrities or as duplicates of the artist himself. Inferring from the title, this head is most likely a portrait of East Village writer and scenester Glenn O’Brien.
