“This is my home, the home given to me by my mother. I’ve lived here all my life. I had to stay.”
83-year-old Ben Meno took shelter at home when Typhoon Mawar left widespread damage on Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
The house has been in his family since he was younger and had to be rebuilt after Typhoon Paka destroyed it in 1997. Ben’s family received help from the Red Cross to assist with the rebuilding process, which motivated him to get involved and serve on the Guam Red Cross’ Board of Directors for 12 years. He also became a disaster volunteer and deployed to New Orleans to help people affected by Hurricane Katrina.
“It was my way of giving back,” said Ben. “The Red Cross helped me so much when I needed it, and I’m glad I was able to help with the Hurricane Katrina disaster operation.”
