In the 32 years Clyde Evans has overseen development in West Des Moines, the built geography of the city has dramatically changed, from construction of jordancreektc and the surrounding area to massive Microsoft data centers. The city's population also more than doubled during Evans' tenure, from just over 31,700 people in 1990 — the year before Evans started as West Des Moines' community and economic development director — to more than 70,700 people in 2022, according to census records. Evans, who is preparing for retirement next month, is more humble about his legacy than co-workers and developers he's worked with, who praise his good-natured character and his drive to look for solutions that have benefited the city while allowing projects to proceed. “He’s been a great asset for the community for a long time,” city manager Tom Hadden said.
