Propecia (finasteride) was first approved for male pattern baldness in 1997. Since that time it has been one of the most effective ways to help men and now women (off label) to reduce hair loss and to regrow hair. Despite its effectiveness and people do experience side effects, and there are allegations of long-term or permanent side effects. As a dermatologist this is a medication that I prescribe to my patients frequently, after a thorough discussion of the risks and benefits. My patients have done quite well on it both in regrowth of hair and in avoiding mild or serious side effects.
