The spring 2019 Missouri River flooding destroyed many homes across southwest Iowa as they were submerged in water. Many have left their homes, and the towns they lived in, behind. The disaster is likely accelerating population loss in some smaller cities that were already shrinking. ⠀ ⠀ Loyd and Brigitte Janssen moved from Pacific Junction to Navarre, Florida and say they are happy there and will not return. ⠀ ⠀ Alesha Buchanan, who now lives near Westboro, Missouri, told IPR that she doesn’t think she can pack up and move her kids again.⠀ ⠀ Some residents, however, say they just want to go home. Eric Borrego and his family bought a trailer and moved to Nebraska City, Nebraska and are hoping to move back to Hamburg. ⠀ ⠀ Read the full story, and find more from our #IowaInFocus series by following the link in our bio. ⠀ ⠀ 📸: IPR/Katie Peikes ⠀ ⠀ #rurallife #IANews #flood
