Let’s go over a more beginner to intermediate exercise the rider can work on (before we resort to tying the reins around your horse’s neck, see last reel 😅)
.
Utilizing a driving reins helps the rider who likes to hold tension in their wrist, maybe they like to turn their thumbs in and ride with a straight arm, or for the rider who does some “bit wiggling”
.
The driving reins helps me find that straight line from elbow, hand, to the horse’s mouth. I also find it easier to find a softer contact. Meaning, when Swatch reaches out and takes the bit forward, my hand moves with his movement.
.
You can utilize this on the flat and jumping. (I even know a Will Coleman kept a driving rein with one of his horses in dressage a few years ago at the Advanced level) But, I usually do this temporarily to find the softness again.
.
Let me know if tag me if you practice this as well!
