Why does qualified immunity even exist?
Lawsuits filed by victims of police violence are often thrown out before they can even begin due to qualified immunity, which shields government officials such as police officers from civil suits unless the defendant violates “clearly established” law. While police officers say they wouldn’t be able to act quickly in stressful situations for fear that making a mistake could get them sued, opponents see qualified immunity as a roadblock to holding police accountable.
