Small businesses are like the small creatures in an ecosystem. Individually, they’re tiny. Collectively, they play an outsized role in the health and vitality of a place. Healthy ecosystems need small organisms. Healthy economies need small businesses. Small spaces are difficult to build and even harder to build in a way that keeps them affordable. But that challenge is worth it. A small business is worthy because of what it is, not because of what it might someday become. It does not need to scale to justify its existence. If we want neighborhoods with a real sense of place, if we want neighbors who feel ownership and have literal ownership in the built environment, then we need to start celebrating and building smaller spaces. #IncrementalDevelopment #neighborhoodevokution #development #urbanism
