Have you ever heard of a building called the Texas Donut or the Dallas Donut? This image resurfaced at the Urban Guild conference I attended last weekend, and it struck me even more after just returning from Charleston. One of these buildings is designed for peak land efficiency. The other is designed for beauty and delight. We visit Charleston for that beauty and delight, but when you look closer, the building we assume to be efficient really isn’t. Its only true efficiency is how many cars it can store. This is what happens when we take away people’s freedom to build thoughtfully on their own land and center everything around cars instead. #urbanism #citydesign #architecture #walkablecities #strongtowns #charleston Other related videos: 1.
