An unacceptable number of people die each year in America from car crashes, but fatalities have gone down in part thanks to ingenious safety features inside and outside of vehicles. Yet for all this design, we still haven’t decided what we actually want our cities to do. What if many of these features were unnecessary? What if simply slowing cars where people are present not only made streets safer, but also made them more economically viable and delightful? This doesn’t mean cars are unwelcome everywhere, or that high-speed roads have no place on the outskirts of town. But just as we would never imagine a highway running through a shopping mall or neighborhood, what if we drastically reduced the spaces where cars reign supreme? #streetdesign #urbandesign #cityplanning # urbanism
