50 years ago today on October 21, 1976, ten local riders arrived in Fairfax, CA to ride their balloon-tire bikes downhill on a steep fire road as fast as possible, thus creating arguably the first mountain bike race. Over the next few years, racing down Repack was a regular occurrence for those brave enough to push their bikes and their bodies to the utmost limit.
USBHOF Inductees Otis Guy, Joe Breeze, Tom Ritchey, and Gary Fisher would all take part in Repack over the years. These three, alongside Charlie Kelly, Charlie Cunningham, Wende Cragg, and numerous other pioneers, would help transform mountain biking into a global phenomenon!
