In honor of the 1989-90 Elite Eight team’s 25th Anniversary, we look back at the greatest moments in LMU History. This one was from 25 years ago today, Feb. 3, 1990 might be one of the most talked about games in LMU’s history. The Lions fell to Shaquille O’Neal and the LSU Tigers in overtime, 148-141. Hank Gathers had 48 points and 13 rebounds. Bo Kimble and Jeff Fryer each hit six three-pointers on their way to 32 and 28 points, respectively. Seven players had double figures for LSU, including a triple-double for O’Neal, earning 20 points, 24 rebounds and 12 blocks. The Tigers finished hitting 64.2 percent of their field goals (61-of-95) while the Lions put up 116 shots, hitting 44.8 percent. LMU erased a 14-point halftime deficit with a 76-point second half to force overtime. Broadcast on CBS, it was a national coming out party for the Lions and their up-tempo style of basketball.
