Troy, NY has become a flashpoint in the fight over Flock cameras and what their growing surveillance network means for privacy and public safety. The city’s been in a state of emergency since April due to the fight about Flock. In a statement to The News Movement, the mayor’s office defended the state of emergency, saying Troy was already contractually obligated to pay Flock and could have faced a lawsuit if the administration had not bypassed the city auditor, whose actions it called “shenanigans.” The administration also said it supports Flock as a “critical” law-enforcement tool, while acknowledging residents’ concerns about privacy and data security. We reached out to Flock Safety for comment, but did not hear back. @reemxfarhat reports. #flock #troyny #alpr
