This might be a reality for some, but for people like those in Italy there's a long-held tradition of children automatically being given their father’s surname.  Dario Franceschini is an Italian politician who has proposed that all newborns should automatically be given their mothers’ surname.  He argues that “[t]aking a father’s name has been a driver for male chauvinism and changing the rules would be compensation for centuries of injustice,”.  Franceschini, 66 is a former culture minister and senator with the centre-left Democratic Party.  He’ll introduce a bill to try and achieve this law change, but it’s unlikely to pass because of opposition from Giorgia Meloni’s ruling coalition.  It’s generated opposition from the right and debate in the Italian media. #italy #surname #maidenname #patriarchy #debate #meloni
