In a historic first, women have achieved parity with men in lead roles on the big screen. Two studies, the San Diego State University’s Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film, and the University of Southern California’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, found that in 2024 top-grossing films with female leads were at least as common as top-grossing films with male leads. Some of the movies in 2024 with female leads were 'Wicked', with Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, 'The Substance' with Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley and 'Mean Girls', the musical film.
