A French mayor put himself between police and a group of student protesters as tensions erupted in the streets. Saint-Denis Mayor Bally Bagayoko was caught in tear gas after stepping forward during a demonstration in Paris, saying officers were moving against students who had shown little aggression. Bagayoko said he felt compelled to intervene because many of the young people reminded him of his own children. 'It is my responsibility to be at their side,' he said.
