Texas has been ordered to install air conditioning across its entire prison system by the end of 2029 after a federal judge ruled extreme heat was violating inmates' constitutional rights. The ruling follows years of legal challenges over conditions inside Texas prisons, where temperatures can climb above 100F (38C) during the summer. Judge Robert Pitman said inmates had described passing out, becoming ill and even using toilet water to cool themselves in un-air-conditioned facilities, calling the conditions 'not humane.' The Texas Department of Criminal Justice plans to appeal the decision, while estimating that installing air conditioning systemwide could cost around $1.5 billion. #texas #usa #news #prison #crime
