We’ve got truly historic news: parts of East Campus have been added to the National Register of Historic Places! Eight buildings, including Yellow Cottage, the Forman Center and the numbered buildings, make up the State Home and School Historic District, which is now recognized by the nationalparkservice. The site is the former home of the Rhode Island State Home and School for Dependent and Neglected Children, which cared for 10,000 children from 1885-1979. This means our campus is now an official part of our state and national history. This important recognition is nearly two decades in the making, initiated by RIC alumnus and social worker Richard Hillman ‘83, MSW ‘96 back in 2002. Later, RIC alum lizrochefort ‘10, the Principal Architectural Historian for the RI Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission prepared the nomination – and now it will live on in history!
