#flashbackfriday,
#RICFest edition: Did you know that RIC used to have a bar on campus?
•••
It was called the Rathskeller and it was located in the ricstudentunion, where the cafe is now. These photos show the school
#pub in its early ‘80s heyday. In 1970, the legal drinking age was lowered to 18, so nearly every student on campus was old enough to drink. By 1983, however, the drinking age was back to 21, which brought the majority of students back under the legal age. That, combined with the cost of liability insurance incurred by the college, led to the closing of the Rathskeller in 1985. In 1986, it was replaced by a coffee house.

Tomorrow the spirit of the Rathskeller lives on for just one day, as the first-ever
#RICtoberfest #beergarden will happen on the Quad! Folks
#21andover can enjoy samples from
#localbrewers & light bites from 11:30-2:30pm. Prost!
