Incredible focus from leonardodicaprio during this Steadicam shot on the set of “The Wolf of Wall Street”. In the beginning you see the 2nd AC clap the slate very softly in front of Leo’s face. This is something called “soft sticks”. The reason why they do soft sticks is so they wouldn’t take the actor out of the moment by slamming the clapper in front of their face. Sometimes the 2nd AC will also call out “soft sticks” during clapping so that the editor knows that they really have to listen for the clapping sound. Besides the Steadicam Operator, you can also see the 1st AC walking alongside him with a Preston Wireless Follow Focus. He doesn’t have a monitor, but instead he keeps looking over at the CineTape screen that’s mounted on the Mattebox. CineTape measures the distance using ultrasonic lasers that the camera can’t see.
