Buck moth caterpillar season is back in New Orleans, especially in neighborhoods with lots of oak trees. -Audubon Insectarium’s Jayme Necaise says buck moths are one of four stinging caterpillar species found in New Orleans. -Their spine-like hairs can stick in the skin, release venom, and cause immediate pain that can last from 24 hours to a week or more. -Residents and pets in oak-heavy neighborhoods are most likely to run into them. -What to do if you get stung: gently use adhesive tape to lift out the hairs, wash the area with soap and water, use a cold compress, and consider antihistamines. Get emergency help if symptoms suggest anaphylaxis. Reported by Devin Bartolotta, WWL Louisiana. Subscribe for more New Orleans news and neighborhood updates.
