As of January 24, health officials reported 67 active TB cases, primarily in Wyandotte County, with an additional 79 people diagnosed with latent TB. Kansas’ health department initially described this as the largest documented TB outbreak in the U.S. since the CDC began tracking cases in the 1950s. However, someone from the CDC pushed back on this claim, citing a TB outbreak in Georgia homeless shelters from 2015 to 2017, which saw over 170 active cases and more than 400 latent cases. It is believed that the vast majority of the general public in the Kansas City area and rest of the country is not at risk, or is at extremely low risk.
