Although not currently widely spoken about, there has been a surge in the cases of patients aged 60 and older presenting to the clinics with sexually transmitted infections [STI‘s]. Some locations have actually noted STI outbreaks, in various nursing homes and assisted living facilities. This is likely contributing to the general upward trend of cases of STIs across the country over the past few years. This is noted to be likely due to the growing popularity of senior-specific dating apps, the rate of divorces, ease of access to Viagra, and also reduce fears about pregnancy + a carefree attitude. This is one reason why as physicians we have to encourage discussion with patients about their sexual history, even if they are elderly and not assume that they are not engaging in certain activities.
