Hereditary hemochromatosis causes the body to absorb too much iron from the food you eat. This excess iron is stored in your organs with too much iron potentially leading to serious medical conditions. The genes that cause this condition are inherited but only a minority of people with the genes ever develop serious issues. Some people might also have secondary hemochromatosis which is not inherited and is often referred to as iron overload. This could be due to multiple iron transfusions which can lead to excess iron accumulation. Treatment included regularly removing blood from your body. Since much of the iron in the body is contained in red blood cells, this treatment helps lower iron levels. In some cases, the doctor may recommend medication especially if you for some reason cannot undergo phlebotomy (not commonly used in the hereditary type).
