When someone smokes cigarettes, they and those around them are exposed to many cancer-causing chemicals that affect organs other than the lungs. Women who smoke are about twice as likely as those who don't smoke to get cervical cancer. It is believed that these substances damage the DNA of the cells within the cervix and may contribute to the development of precancerous lesions and cervical cancer. Smoking also makes the immune system less effective in fighting HPV infections which further increases the risk of cervical cancer. You can reduce your risk of developing cervical cancer by getting regular Pap smears or pelvic exams, quitting smoking, and getting tested for HPV.
