V4g1nal dryness can cause irritation, burning, as well as pain with intercourse.
It’s seen in the years leading up to menopause but more common after menopause.
In certain situations, people have been without intercourse for a long time and then notice these symptoms when they get intimate with a partner.
The cause is often low hormone (estrogen) levels related to menopause which normally helps to maintain the lubrication, elasticity and thickness.
Low levels of estrogen can cause thinning, drying, and inflammation of the v4g1nal walls and this is called v4g1nal atrophy.
There are other situations associated with low estrogen levels as well as non hormonal factors that could be responsible for v4g1nal dryness.
Lubricants and v4g1nal moisturizers can be used to deal with the symptoms but it is important to see your healthcare provider especially if irritation and pain during S3x don’t improve despite using these, or if you have other symptoms.
