Does pulling out work if you plan to avoid getting pregnant? Yes, It does to some degree and although unreliable, it has to be done correctly to be any effective. The pull-out method, or the withdrawal method, is one way to prevent pregnancy. It is not reliable, but it is better than taking no precautions and can be used by couples that don’t mind getting pregnant. Although an increasing number of people practice this method and claim it is easy, it requires a lot of control and perfect timing. Unfortunately this is not the case as for various reasons like the partner not being able to pull out in time. If your goals are to avoid getting pregnant and getting an STI, a safer option would be using a barrier (hormonal contraceptives do not prevent STIs) method and pulling out simultaneously.
