Urinary tract infections, also called "UTIs," are infections that affect any part of your urinary system — your kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. Most infections involve the lower urinary tract — the bladder and the urethra. Both bladder and kidney infections are more common in females than in males. Urinary tract infections do not always cause signs and symptoms, but if you do develop symptoms it is important to be able to identify these symptoms and notify your provider. This is to prevent potential complications or a more severe illness if left untreated. Unfortunately UTIs may be overlooked or mistaken for other conditions in older adults.
