Relatives of Eric J. Hurtado knew he was struggling. The 36-year-old had been exhibiting signs of serious mental illness, and his family in Southern California was hoping to fly him home so they could get him the help they said he desperately needed. Then on Friday, a Portland police detective called with devastating news: Hurtado was dead. A Portland police officer had shot and killed him after confronting Hurtado outside Hotel Vintage on Southwest Broadway on Thursday afternoon following reports that Hurtado had stabbed two strangers with a box cutter.
