Happy Father’s Day, Sun ☀️
Our Sun may be old, large, and full of gas, but it also provides our solar system with energy and light, without which life as we know it would not exist. Its gravity holds objects as small as dust particles and as large as planets in its orbit.
Our Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) caught this image of the Sun emitting a mid-level solar flare shortly after the Moon passed between the observatory and the Sun. The SDO keeps an eye on our star in coordination with a fleet of other spacecraft, tracking changes to its magnetosphere, atmosphere, and interior.
Image description: The churning surface of the Sun glows in patches of orange and red. Midway down the star, light dances off its surface in wisps of bright orange. A dark disc of the Moon is seen in the bottom right of the image.
