Yes, that was K-pop group BTS at the White House. The group made an appearance on Tuesday to take part in the Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre announced during a briefing that this is part of the Biden administration’s efforts to address racism, xenophobia, and intolerance against the AANHPI community. In 2021, BTS revealed their own experience of discrimination. “We have endured expletives without reason and were mocked for the way we looked. We were even asked why Asians spoke in English,” BTS said in a tweet. “These experiences were enough to make us feel powerless and chip away our self-esteem.” In the press briefing, BTS also expressed how music is a powerful medium to connect people. “It’s not wrong to be different. Equality begins when we open up and embrace all of our differences,” BTS member Suga said. #bts #BTSatTheWhiteHouse #aanhpi 📷: Saul Loeb, AFP
