Looking for an eye-catching yet tough flower for your summer garden? Globe thistles (Echinops ritro) are late summer bloomers that thrive in a variety of different soil types and full sun. Generally blooming from mid-summer to early fall, these clump-forming beauties add a cool splash of silvery blue color to the summer garden while remaining relatively low maintenance. In addition to being relatively drought tolerant and resistant to most pests and diseases, globe thistles are a magnet for a variety of pollinators! To extend your enjoyment, their flowers can be used in dried arrangements.
Globe thistles are suited to USDA hardiness zones 3-8, and can be grown successfully in much of the United States from Wyoming to North Carolina, and more. Have a favorite globe thistle selection in your garden, or think of a fact we didn’t mention? Send us an email at webmaster@ahsgardening.org with your photo or fact.
