Aphids feed on plant tissues and transmit viruses – luckily, an adult ladybug may consume hundreds of aphids a day and thousands in its lifetime. Did you know there are actually over 5,000 different types of ladybugs? And, they’re not even bugs but rather beetles such as cicadas, aphids and Ringo Star – with two of those being members of the scientific order Hemiptera and the other a 1960’s rock icon. Although they come in many different colors and patterns, the most familiar in the United States is the seven-spotted ladybug. A ladybug can secrete a fluid from its legs when threatened that is oily and tastes terrible.
