In 1965 Massimo Vignelli and his wife Lella Valle landed in the United States and founded the design consulting firm Unimark with Bob Noorda and other colleagues. At the time, the NY Subway was about 60 years old, and Unimark was commissioned to ri-design the communication system. Vignelli and Noorda spent months in the subways focusing not on how things should look but rather how things were used as during the long walk transfer routes actually read information. Thus was born the colorful minimalist map that Vignelli called "dot-to-dot" a true easy-to-read color code where route and station were easily memorized by natives and tourists alike. The same system is now used throughout the world.
