“That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Before Neil Armstrong delivered this iconic line 53 years ago today, he and the two other members of Apollo 11 went through rigorous training to prepare them for the first moon landing. The astronauts traveled to various landscapes around the world with topography similar to the moon’s, and the pockmarked terrain of the Nevada Test Site proved a perfect match.
The Nevada Test Site, located just over 60 miles (97 km) northwest of Las Vegas, has hosted 928 nuclear explosive tests between 1951 and 1992. The area’s nuclear-made craters and ancient volcanic formations are similar to the moon’s numerous comet and asteroid impacts. While there, the astronauts practiced collecting geological samples and driving the lunar rover.
