“I envision my work in the Hall of Sculpture as a formal, lyrical, and symbolic hold on the site. I will “stain” the site with a signifier, with a past history, but also permeate it with an aesthetic experience.” —Thu Van Tran
In Colors of Grey, artist Thu Van Tran (thuvantranart) draws inspiration from the “Rainbow of Herbicides” used by the United States military during the Vietnam War to create lyrical, abstract frescoes. Presented in our Hall of Sculpture for the 58th Carnegie International, these striking, colorful frescoes stand in tension with the destructive impact of the chemicals and violence that inform the pigment used by the artist.
The 58th Carnegie International is on view through April 2, 2023 — plan a visit to experience Tran’s frescoes in person before they are gone!
