Artist Romare Bearden’s Pittsburgh Memories recalls the artist’s childhood years spent with his grandparents who ran a boardinghouse for African American steelworkers in the city during the Great Migration.
This dynamic composition, currently on view in the exhibition A Pittsburgh Anthology, captures a moment of rest for the workers in the interior of the boardinghouse and the dense urban landscape surrounding it, framed by the fire and smoke from steel mills, factories, and a locomotive.
