Happy Birthday, Thaddeus Mosley! Pittsburgh-based sculptor #ThaddeusMosley was born on this day! Mosley is known for his monumental sculptures made from large, felled trees. He chooses a portion of the tree and reveals the qualities of the wood by carving textures on the entire surface. On occasion, Mosley includes other natural materials like stone, metal, or rope. This sculpture, Georgia Gate, currently on view in the museum, includes marble bases that anchor the tree limbs as they extend gracefully upwards towards the sky. — Thaddeus Mosley, Georgia Gate, 1975, Carnegie Museum of Art, The Carnegie Museum of Art Purchase Award: 66th Annual Exhibition of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, © Thaddeus Mosley
